Time period:    1878-1903
Place: Italy

Summary: At the age of 19, St. Gemma suffered from curvature of the spine, spinal meningitis, deafness, spinal tumors, hair loss, paralysis and migraines. During this time, Gemma began a deep devotion to Venerable Gabriel  Possenti (St. Gabriel) of the Sorrowful Mother. She was visited by St. Gabriel, who told her to pray a novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Towards the end of the novena she was cured. The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Gemma giving her the gift of the stigmata which she bore for eighteen months. In 1902, Gemma “offered herself to God as a victim for the salvation of souls” and for the reparation of sins. She grew very sick, experienced extreme spiritual desolation and attacks by the devil. She died on Holy Saturday, April 11, 1903 at the age of 25. Gemma was deemed Blessed by the Church based on her heroic virtue. She faithfully exhibited obedience, stalwart patience in the face of suffering and the acceptance of poverty.
