St. Francis de Sales, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
Feast Day: January 24
Time Period: 1567 - 1622
Summary: During his life, Francis never pushed his wishes on God he always waited for God’s will to be clear. For thirteen years he knew he had a vocation to the priesthood but he became a soldier and studied law while waiting to know God’s will. As a Priest, Francis changed the way people looked at holiness. It was no longer only for monks and nuns, holiness was for ordinary people. He helped lay people grow in holiness through spiritual direction. One of his first directees was St. Jane de Chantal who was on a path to mystical union with God and by directing her Francis followed her and became a mystic himself. Francis wrote a book to help the laity in holiness, “Introduction to the devout life” and penned many sermons which he placed under the doors of homes to inspire conversion.
