As a thirteen-year-old orphan, Anne tended the sheep of her brothers. She wanted to consecrate her virginity to God but thought her brothers would oppose it. While asleep with her rosary in her hands the Blessed Virgin Mary showed her the Discalced Carmelites convent in Avila. Then Jesus appeared reiterating Mary’s words that Anne should become a Discalced Carmelite nun. Upon awaking Anne resolved to become a nun and in 1572 made her profession as a Carmelite in the hands of St. Teresa. Anne remained a close friend of St. Teresa who died in her arms in 1582.
